Fire in the Hull!
Well, unfortunately I don’t have photos, but a burning barge just crashed into the marina in front of our apartment. It came across from the other side (I didn’t see it) and struck the jetty just near the south-west corner of The Nolan building, where the temporary fencing is up preventing access to the construction site. It was chased by a Police helicopter with spotlight (evidently searching for persons overboard) and a large tugboat, which I watched extinguish the flames. The MFB onshore were relatively useless, not being able to get their engines close enough for their hose pressure to be effective. Combined with the tug, however, they were able to extinguish the flames.
There appears to be no loss of life - the vessel appears to be some kind of barge with no evidence of cabin or mast structure. The ambulance is parked, with no evidence of a medivac.
I tried to get some photos but didn’t have time to fiddle with manual exposure settings on dad’s camera (my batteries died). My treo got some after-shots (fire out), which I will post tomorrow.
Still, nice drama for a Saturday night
David.
