Opening Pandora’s Box
Well, I just stumbled across Pandora and I must say it looks cool. Read about the history at VentureBlog, a great read for the entrepreneurial types out there
Pandora has a simple flash-based interface. The scrolling image display is nicely designed. It’s certainly an interesting change, as I usually only listen to music through iTunes. But then, web-based eschews the need for plugins for different media programs. That’s a good thing. They also need to maintain this level of control for their licensing agreements, but I can cope with that. Still, a streaming protocol would be cool (perhaps with login). But then, that would defeat half their revenue model. They operate a subscription service, and presumably receive commissions on the links to Amazon and the iTMS.
My main complaint thus far is they offer no classical music at all. Still, in the realm of classical music I am a lot more in tune with what I like than with popular stuff, so in terms of need, this service hits the spot.
Now I just have to figure out how they determine this 10-hour limit. It’s not cookie-based. Server-based IP detection would break down with proxies. Hmmm…
Check it out.
Until next time…
